Platte Bay, near Honor, Michigan, is a renowned fishing destination located at the southern end of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Known for its clear, shallow waters and stunning natural beauty, the bay offers excellent opportunities for anglers targeting salmon, lake trout, and steelhead. During late summer and early fall, Platte Bay becomes a hotspot for salmon as they stage near the mouth of the Platte River before their spawning runs, making it an ideal location for casting, trolling, or fly fishing.

The bay’s proximity to the Platte River adds to its appeal, as the river provides a key spawning route for migrating salmon. Anglers often find success fishing near the drop-offs, sandy flats, and river mouth. With its combination of breathtaking scenery, diverse fishing opportunities, and abundant wildlife, Platte Bay is a favorite destination for both locals and visiting anglers seeking a memorable fishing experience.

Here’s what makes Platte Bay stand out for fishing:

1. Coho Salmon

Platte Bay is famous for its coho salmon fishing. Anglers target these fish primarily in late summer and early fall as they gather near the mouth of the Platte River before running upstream to spawn. Both boat and shore fishing are popular here during this time.

2. Lake Trout

Lake trout are another popular target in Platte Bay, especially during the summer.

3. Techniques

Fishing in Platte Bay can vary depending on the species and the time of year. Trolling with spoons, flies, or plugs is a common method, especially for coho and lake trout. Casting from shore with spinners or using spawn sacs for river steelhead are also effective techniques.

4. Scenic Experience

The bay’s proximity to the Sleeping Bear Dunes provides a beautiful backdrop for a day of fishing. The crystal-clear waters and scenic surroundings make it an enjoyable place to fish, even when the bite is slow.
